On the fourth Saturday of nearly every month from March through October, a line of restored trucks and classic cars rolls down Main Street in Weston. No gate, no ticket booth, nobody checking for a wristband. The Weston Moonshiners Car Club has been doing this since 2011, five to ten p.m., and it doesn't show up on any regional list of fall festivals worth driving to. If you live in Platte County, you've probably already stumbled onto one of these nights. If you don't, you'd have to be standing on Main Street to know it was happening at all.
That gap says something true about how fall actually works here. Every September, regional roundups treat Weston's Applefest as the county's one big harvest event and stop there. But Applefest is only one register of a season that runs on two different frequencies, one built for a crowd that drives up from Kansas City, and one that just keeps happening on Main Street whether anyone outside town notices or not. This year those two frequencies land on the exact same date, and it's worth knowing before you plan around it.
The one sized for a Thursday evening
Platte City's own fall event doesn't try to be a weekend destination. The Main Street Fall Festival runs a single evening this year, Thursday, September 24, from 5 to 8 p.m. Vendor booths are sized at roughly ten feet wide, electric hookups are limited, and the city's own event notice reminds vendors that anyone selling food outside Missouri's Cottage Food Law needs a permit from the Platte County Health Department before setting up.
None of that is filler detail. It tells you exactly how this event is scaled: three hours, one street, food and craft vendors, no lodging package, no shuttle system. It's built for the town it's in, not for a crowd driving in from somewhere else.
The one built for a bigger footprint
Thirty minutes north, Weston's Applefest runs the opposite kind of operation. The 2026 dates are Saturday and Sunday, October 3 and 4, with the parade stepping off at 10 a.m. and moving through downtown. The festival adds free shuttle buses running all weekend from parking areas at Weston High School, Weston Elementary School, and the Weston Historic Orchard, dropping riders on Thomas Street downtown. Weston's chamber lists the event as free to attend, but that shuttle infrastructure only makes sense for a crowd too large to park on Main Street, which tells you this festival was built for a much wider draw than a Thursday night in Platte City ever needs to be.
The apple theme doesn't stop at the festival gates, either. Alldredge Orchards, a family farm in Platte City, runs its own apple-picking season alongside Applefest, with pumpkins, a petting area for kids, and an on-site café. Picking apples the same week Applefest happens isn't choosing between two competing events. It's watching one seasonal theme play out at two different scales, a single farm's calendar and a whole downtown's.
The one that was never trying to be a festival
Which brings the calendar back to that fourth Saturday. The Moonshiners cruise-in isn't scaled for visitors because it was never built as a draw in the first place. It's a standing club activity that happens to take place in public, on the same stretch of road Applefest shuts down for its parade three weeks earlier. Laying the recurring date next to the one-off festival dates makes the season's actual shape easier to see:

The Saturday everything actually overlaps
Line up the fourth Saturdays against the festival dates and one square does double duty. October 24 is both the closing Weston Whiskey Festival at the Burley House, with cigar pairings worked in from Weston Tobacco, and the Moonshiners' last cruise-in of the season. Neither event is scheduled around the other. The whiskey festival sits on the same weekend every year, and the car club always meets on the fourth Saturday regardless of what else is booked downtown. This year the math just happens to put them on the same night.
That's the one Saturday worth building an actual plan around instead of assuming Weston will feel like it did the weekend before. Main Street will be carrying a cruise-in crowd that shows up on its own schedule and a ticketed whiskey festival crowd parking near the Burley House at the same time. Neither group is enormous by itself. Together, on a two-lane historic Main Street, they add up to something busier than a typical fourth Saturday in Weston.
Where the season actually ends
Fall here doesn't stop at Halloween. Weston closes its year with the 67th Annual Candlelight Homes Tour, set for December 5 and 6, a ticketed, multi-site walk through the town's historic homes decorated for the season. It's a different kind of event from everything else on this list, not a street festival, not a recurring club meetup, but a once-a-year look inside private buildings that stay closed the rest of the year. Sixty-seven years also means this tradition has outlasted plenty of the shops and businesses that have opened and closed on Main Street since it started.
What this means for your actual weekends
None of this takes much effort to plan around once you know what type of event you're walking into:
- Want something low-key and close to home? Platte City's Main Street Fall Festival on September 24 fits into a Thursday without needing to clear a whole day.
- Heading to Weston for the parade and Applefest crowds October 3 and 4? Park at one of the schools or the Historic Orchard and take the shuttle rather than circling for a spot on Main Street.
- Free on October 24? Decide ahead of time whether you're there for the cruise-in, the whiskey festival, or both, because Main Street will be carrying more traffic than a normal fourth Saturday.
- Want the quietest version of downtown Weston? The stretch of weeks between Applefest and the Whiskey Festival is usually the calmest.
Fall in Platte County isn't one continuous festival season so much as several separate systems running on their own clocks, mostly missing each other by a week or two. This year, one Saturday, they don't. That's worth knowing whether you're mapping out an afternoon or you're just the kind of person who likes noticing when a place's calendar finally lines up.
