North Kansas City is calling this month Northtown Days. The City first announced it in its September 11 Week in Review as "a new month-long celebration of all things NKC," built from "the events, traditions, businesses, organizations, and people that make our community unique." The full schedule sits on the City's Northtown Days page. It has 26 dated entries running from October 1 to Halloween.
Go through those 26 rows one by one and a pattern shows up. Only a few are new. Most are the regular programming of three businesses on or near Armour Road. The rest are civic traditions that ran in past Octobers without a banner. That makes the City's announcement more useful than it first looks, because it amounts to a map of what already happens here all year.
Three venues fill most of the month
Here is how the dated entries on the City's calendar break down by host:
- Screenland Armour: six entries. They include Night of the Living Dead on October 1, Backyard Movie screenings of Casper, Death Becomes Her, and a Universal Monsters double bill of The Invisible Man and Frankenstein, Nosferatu with a live score by Invincible Czars on October 28, and a Halloween and Halloween II double feature on October 31.
- Cinder Block Brewing: six entries. They include the Northland Big Band, NKC Neighbors Night, Chiefs watch parties against the Chargers and the Seahawks, a KC Current watch party against the Washington Spirit, and BLOCKtoberfest.
- Velo Garage and Tap House: three entries. There's a show with Major Matt Mason USA and Bad Actor on October 3, a Halloween edition of Thirsty Thursdays on October 29, and the Northtown Trick or Treat Cruise on October 31.
- Rewind Video and Dive: one entry, the Cinema Social Club Halloween Party on October 22.
Together that's 16 of the 26. Many of them are recurring events with October themes. The City's event record describes the Northland Big Band, a group founded in 2025, as a regular second-Wednesday performance at Cinder Block with no cover. NKC Neighbors Night happens every third Thursday, with $1 off beers and ciders. Thirsty Thursdays is Velo's weekly no-drop ride, and the October 29 date is simply its Halloween edition. The Cinema Social Club meets every month, and October gets a special party. The Screenland titles belong to its Halloween-season SHOCKtober programming.
The Big Band has one scheduling wrinkle. The City's landing page lists it on Wednesday, October 14. The detailed event record says October 4. October 14 is the second Wednesday of the month, which fits the band's usual slot, but check with Cinder Block before you go.
What the City actually added
The City's own announcement names exactly two "new ways to celebrate," and both fall on October 9 and 10.
The first is Northtown Supper: Tailgate Edition, on Friday, October 9, from 5 to 7 p.m. outside the NKC High School stadium. Mayor Smith hosts a community tailgate before the Hornets take on Lee's Summit North.
The second is the inaugural Northtown Oktoberfest on Saturday, October 10, from noon to 5 p.m. It's a free street festival on Armour Road between Swift and Fayette Streets, hosted by the NKC Rotary Club in partnership with the City. The City promises live music and entertainment, Oktoberfest food, local and regional craft beer, games, and contests. The City points to oktoberfestnkc.org for details. Bands, vendors, and contest specifics hadn't been confirmed in anything we reviewed, so check that site closer to the day. The City's calendar entry for the festival shows a date range running to October 12, but the Week in Review and the main schedule both list it as a single Saturday afternoon.
There's one more first, and a private business runs it. The Northtown Trick or Treat Cruise leaves Velo Garage and Tap House on Halloween morning from 10 a.m. to noon and rolls through NKC's residential streets. The City's event record calls it the first annual ride. So even one of the new traditions comes from a venue that already brings people out on bikes every Thursday.
The civic traditions it folded in
The rest of the calendar belongs to institutions that held these events before anyone called the month anything.
NKC Parks & Rec's Howl-O-Ween at Waggin' Trail Dog Park is Saturday, October 10, at 10:30 a.m. A $5 donation gets your dog into the costume contest and earns a goodie bag, and proceeds are shared with the NKC Animal Shelter. The City promoted an earlier edition in its October 2024 Week in Review, along with a Trunk or Treat that year at Macken Park. This year's Trunk-or-Treat moves to the NKC Parks & Recreation Center on Saturday, October 24, from 1 to 3 p.m. It's free and open to the public while supplies last.
Howl at the Moon, a 21+ evening at Waggin' Trail Dog Park, is Monday, October 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. A suggested $5 donation benefits the Dakota Rogers Project. The NKC YMCA Trunk or Treat runs Thursday, October 22, from 5 to 7:30 p.m.
The oldest item on the list may be the NKC High School Homecoming Parade on Friday, October 23, at 2 p.m. The City's listing calls it an annual tradition. The route leaves the high school, heads out along Armour Road, and comes back via Swift Street, and the public is invited to line it. On Saturday, October 17, the NKC Historical Society and Urban Hikes KC host a program from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. tied to the Society's quarterly meeting. It opens with a tour of NKC High School, and a guided walk through Northtown follows.
October 10 is where new and old overlap
The new events and the established ones meet on one Saturday. Here's how the day lines up on the City's schedule, starting from the morning:
- 10:30 a.m. Howl-O-Ween at Waggin' Trail Dog Park.
- Noon to 5 p.m. Northtown Oktoberfest on Armour Road between Swift and Fayette.
- 7:15 to 9:15 p.m. Backyard Movies with Death Becomes Her at Screenland Armour.
If you'd rather eat somewhere other than the festival booths, two Armour Road-area spots have changed this year. Tay's Cheesesteak moved from its longtime storefront at 315 Armour Road to the former Dairy Queen at 615 Armour Road, across from City Hall, and reopened July 20. The Kansas City Star reported that owner Kent Harrison gained a parking lot, a patio, and more indoor seating there, and added One More Scoop vanilla and chocolate to the menu. Harrison has run the downtown spot for 24 years, first as Jersey Boyz and as Tay's since 2022.
For the morning dog-park run, Provis Coffee Roasters opened in late September at 2914 Buchanan St. Ronni Kurtz and Josh Brown, an uncle-and-nephew team, run it, and it's open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., according to the Star.
The rest of the month, sorted by who keeps it going
Today is October 6, so the opening shows at Screenland and Velo have already happened. Here's what's left, along with whether each date is a one-time October event or part of a host's regular rhythm, based on the City's listings:
| Date | Event | Host or venue | Recurring after October? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oct. 14 | Northland Big Band | Cinder Block Brewing | Yes, second Wednesdays |
| Oct. 15 | NKC Neighbors Night | Cinder Block Brewing | Yes, third Thursdays |
| Oct. 17 | Historical Society tour of NKC | NKC High School | Tied to quarterly meeting |
| Oct. 22 | Cinema Social Club Halloween Party | Rewind Video and Dive | Club meets monthly |
| Oct. 23 | Homecoming Parade | Armour Road and Swift Street | Annual |
| Oct. 24 | BLOCKtoberfest, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., free | Cinder Block and The Commons | Not stated |

Most venue listings don't include admission prices, so check with each host. The NKC Public Library runs its own Halloween craft and preschool programs this month. They aren't on the Northtown Days calendar and most require registration.
Look at the right-hand column and you'll see that November keeps much of the schedule going without the banner. Cinder Block will still host the Big Band on second Wednesdays and Neighbors Night on third Thursdays, and Velo's Thursday ride will still go out. The City's next big date is the Mistletowne Market on November 21 and 22 at the Parks & Recreation Center, with local artists and maker goods. If your block wants an October gathering of its own, the City also offers neighborhood block party grants that reimburse eligible expenses up to $400 per event.
Most of the 26 dates on the Northtown Days calendar run on routines these streets already have, and that's part of what an address here comes with. If you've been wondering how a home within walking distance of Armour Road compares in value today, Gateway Real Estate & Auction can give you a starting point. You'll find more local context on our North Kansas City page, or you can get your instant home valuation and talk it over with a neighbor who follows this market.
